The Department of Mathematics at the University of Ibadan is set to honour one of its distinguished alumni and emeritus professors, Professor Samuel Akindiji Ilori, as he marks his 80th birthday. The grand celebration is scheduled to take place on Friday, 10 January 2025, at the Olusegun Ganga Hall, International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, beginning at 12:00 noon.
Professor Ilori, originally from Oyo, has made significant contributions to the field of mathematics both nationally and internationally. A renowned academic, he holds the prestigious titles of Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FMAN), Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS), and Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS). The celebratory event will include a variety of activities to honour Professor Ilori’s legacy and achievements. Key highlights include a talk on Professor Ilori’s life and academic contributions by Emeritus Professor G. O. S. Ekhaguere (NNOM). In addition, speeches will be delivered by Professor M. O. Ajetunmobi, Professor Ilori’s first PhD student, and Professor Ezekiel Ayoola (FNMS), a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan and one of Professor Ilori’s distinguished mentees.
Notably, Professor Ayoola is also from Oyo Town, reflecting the powerful academic lineage and impact of Professor Ilori’s mentorship within their shared community. The event will be hosted by Professor O. O. Sonibare, Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan, with the Chief Host being Professor K. O. Adebowale, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
