The University of Ibadan today hosted a pulling-out ceremony in honour of Professor Adebayo Okunade, a respected scholar in the Department of Political Science, as he marked his 70th birthday and formal retirement from academic service. The event, held at Trenchard Hall, was attended by colleagues, former students, and dignitaries who gathered to celebrate his remarkable contributions to academia, leadership, and democratic development.

Professor Okunade, a distinguished senior academic in the Oyo Scholars’ Congress, was praised for his decades of intellectual impact and unwavering commitment to mentoring generations of scholars and professionals. His contributions extended far beyond the university, shaping policy discussions, human rights advocacy, and pro-democracy movements in Nigeria.

Among the many well-wishers was Comrade Mashood Erubami, Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Ethics in Development (CHRED), who paid a heartfelt tribute to the retiring professor. Recalling their association since 1992, Erubami described Professor Okunade as a pillar of knowledge and integrity, whose expertise had significantly influenced human rights education, democracy training, and conflict resolution studies. He highlighted Okunade’s key role in developing training curriculums for pro-democracy groups, particularly during the June 12, 1993 struggles and Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule.

Fondly referred to as “Lecturer” by members of the Centre, Professor Okunade’s mentorship and scholarship were lauded as transformative. Comrade Erubami underscored his impactful collaborations with other scholars, including Professor Bunmi Ayoade, Professor A. Adedeji, Professor Olawale Albert, and Professor Tajudeen Akanji, among others. His ability to bridge formal academic settings with informal sector training was described as extraordinary, benefiting students, artisans, and grassroots activists alike.

As Professor Okunade transitions into retirement, friends, colleagues, and family members expressed their admiration and best wishes, trusting that his next phase will be filled with continued intellectual contributions. Many affirmed that his legacy will endure, not only through his work but through the countless individuals he has mentored and inspired over the years.
